Supermarket Carparks: These photographs were made between September 2020 and March 2021 during the Covid Pandemic. There is something about the banality of the sites that confers a sort of neutrality. It is almost as if one might be willing significance into being.
I photographed with my Hasselblad 500 C/M. The design of the camera means that photographer looks down into the viewfinder rather than directly at the portrait subject.
I am not sure if it is because people see this as less intimidating, or the fact that I was using film rather than digital, or people just craved some form of social contact, but almost everybody that I approached to be photographed agreed to my request.
There are very few photographs of the period around Spanish Flu, another global pandemic (1918-1920), as though it was collectively willed not to have happened. I felt that I needed to keep a record of how we lived during the Covid Pandemic that would be of interest in the future.
